Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of the irrational use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and its relationship with gastrointestinal adverse events in residents of the Huánuco district. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted. The sample consisted of 196 residents. The results showed that 96.4% had used NSAIDs in the last six months, and 71.4% resorted to self-medication, with pain or discomfort being the main reason for use. Furthermore, 70.9% presented gastrointestinal symptoms, although no statistically significant relationship was found between NSAID use and gastrointestinal adverse events (p = 0.831). It is concluded that NSAID use has a high prevalence, with self-medication being predominant, highlighting the need to strengthen health education strategies and promote the rational use of these medications.
