Abstract

The objective of the study was to demonstrate the antibacterial efficacy of the essential oil of pineapple (Minthostachys mollis) on Staphylococcus aureus strains. The oil was obtained using the vapor entrainment technique and the antibacterial efficacy of the oil was determined using the well diffusion technique. The results showed that the 50% pineapple oil presented an inhibition halo of 6.02 mm, for 75% an inhibition halo of 11.57 mm and for the 100% concentration a halo of 14.20 mm; the positive control (Ciprofloxacin) presented a halo of 31.88 mm and the negative control (DMS) was 6.10 mm. It was concluded that pineapple oil at concentrations of 75% and 100% showed antibacterial efficacy on Staphylococcus aureus strains
