Abstract
The objective of the present work was to demonstrate the antibacterial effect of the essential oil of Tagetes minuta L. (Huacatay) leaves against Streptococcus mutans. The well diffusion method was applied to determine the sensitivity to the essential oil. According to the results, inhibition halos of 17.07 mm were obtained for the essential oil of Huacatay at 100%, 12.52 mm for the essential oil of Huacatay at 50%, the negative control (DMS) did not present antibacterial effect; the positive control (Chlorhexidine 0.12%) presented an average inhibition halo of 29.50 mm. It was concluded that Streptococcus mutans is sensitive to the antibacterial action of Tagetes minuta L. (Huacatay) essential oil
